Christmas Hat Ride boosts stationery drive
Cyclists from Classic Steel and Vintage Cycle Club recently joined hands with the community to collect stationery for the non-profit organisation that assists homeless children – iCare.
THE Christmas Hat Ride held in support of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) iCare has been hailed as a resounding success by the organisers.
Cyclists from Classic Steel and Vintage Cycle Club, joined by others, lined up from as early as 08:00 outside the Pirate Surf Lifesaving Club on Sunday, November 24, to be part of the charitable initiative collecting stationery for the NGO that works on the rehabilitation and family reunification of children living on the streets.
Eric Prinsloo, founder of the club, said the charity ride was established by the club five years ago and that the last two rides have been in support of iCare’s stationery drive. Delighted at the turnout this year, Prinsloo said, “It all went well. We are really happy with the support that we received; it was a great response. Members of the public also came through to support the initiative and drop off stationery, and we were blown away. We ended up staying till 11:00, and the stationery was handed over to iCare members who were also at the event,” added Prinsloo.

Gail Elson, marketing manager for iCare, said the NGO is grateful for the support. She said, “The stationery is part of our Christmas wish list which also includes pencil bags, playing cards, marbles, treats like biscuits and chips, a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and deodorant among other self-care items.”
The NGO has been transforming the lives of homeless children to be effective members of society for over 20 years. iCare has three houses in Illovo where they can accommodate eight boys per house with two house parents. “They live there as a family unit, and the boys do chores and go to school and play soccer which is great for their rehabilitation. It’s a lovely environment, and they love going to school,” said Elson.
