Show iCare that you care

iCare, which was formed in 2002 and helps children on the streets by engaging with them through activities and sports, is requesting donations of several items for those under their care.

A MORNINGSIDE non-profit organisation is looking for basics, such as clothing, school uniforms, stationery and bags, for their five homes and people in their care.

“We are committed to finding meaningful and sustainable solutions to the challenge of addicted street children in Durban. We want these children to have a better future by providing them with rehabilitation, food, clothing, education, skills and shelter at our four houses and rehab centre. All donations will go towards the betterment of a child’s life and, subsequently, their future,” said Gail Elson, marketing manager for iCare.

iCare speaks to young addicted children on the streets and forms a relationship with them. These children are encouraged to visit the drop-in centres where they can engage in activities and sports.

“After permission is received from their parents, the boys go through many months of rehabilitation before being homed in one of our four houses and placed back at school. When the children have either completed their schooling or life skills development, iCare then provides further assistance to integrate them into the workplace,” she added.

The drop-in-centre in Windermere provides meals, clean clothes, bathroom facilities and programmes throughout the day. There is also counselling, literacy, crafts, music and soccer throughout the day.

iCare accompanies them on this journey, never letting go completely but offering guidance through their newfound independence.

The organisation has reported many positive stories over the years, one of them dating back to 2010 when a former street child and iCare boy was named head boy of Phoenix Primary School.

“Qhapela is a great inspiration for the boys currently going through the iCare programme. He often speaks to the boys about reaching their dreams. So when you donate to iCare, you are brightening the future of a young man,” added Elson.

iCare is requesting donations of any pre-owned or unwanted clothing for adult males, females, teenagers, children and babies. They are also in need of shoes, takkies, flip-flops, soccer gear, stationery, school uniforms, bags and books of any type.

Donations can be fetched on a Tuesday or, alternatively, donations can be dropped off at 69 Churchill Road (just down from Windermere Centre) on Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:00.
