According to Lalita Dhasiar Ventura, Umhlanga Hindu Society’s cultural and religious portfolio director, Holi marks the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere, celebrating renewal, hope, and the spirit of togetherness. It is a time when people set aside differences and come together in unity, love, and happiness. It also signifies the triumph of good over evil.
“Holi is celebrated with an explosion of colours, music, and festivity. Traditionally, the night before Holi, people light Holika Dahan (a bonfire) to symbolise the burning away of negativity and the victory of righteousness. The next day, communities gather to throw coloured powders at each other, dance to lively music, and share delicious meals and sweetmeats. It is a festival that breaks social barriers, bringing people of all backgrounds together in a joyous celebration of life,” she said.
The Umhlanga Hindu Society is hosting a grand Holi celebration for the community on Friday, March 14 from 18.00 to 24.00
“The event will be a fun-filled evening with music, dance, colour play, food stalls, and cultural performances and is free to all. Colour powder will be available for purchase at the venue,” she said.
