SANCA fundraiser set for tee-off

SANCA Durban is calling on all golfing enthusiasts and sponsors to meet them on the green at the Royal Durban Golf Club on Thursday, March 20, for their second annual four-ball fundraiser and networking event.

THE South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (SANCA) in Durban is excited to host its second annual Golf Day fundraiser at the Royal Durban Golf Club on Thursday, March 20.

The four-ball and networking event aims to raise funds for the non-profit organisation while providing an opportunity for businesses and individuals to connect on the green. The director for SANCA Durban, Fathima Hussain, called on donors, sponsors and the community to support the initiative.

She said, “SANCA Durban is 69 years old this year, we have a long-standing history within the community. Our operation’s costs are high and we rely on the generosity of our sponsors, donors and the Department of Social Development (DSD) to fund our free community services. There is now a huge demand on our services, especially among the workforce and the youth. The fundraiser will be a platform for the organisation to tell people more about what we do as SANCA.”

The organisation is committed to the prevention and treatment of substance-use disorders, with over 100 service points and 31 SANCA treatment centres across South Africa, 12 of which are in-patient treatment centres. “Much of our funding, 84%, comes from fundraising while 16% comes from DSD. We’re also covered by a lot of the medical aid schemes and we have companies that refer their employees to us. The organisation also works with schools, for drug testing and treatment of the youth,” said Hussain.

SANCA Durban, located in Musgrave, employs a dedicated full-time staff of 25 people. The inpatient treatment facility is equipped to accomodate 34 in-patients, 27 males and seven females. They offer on-site outpatient programmes, youth and learner initiatives, and free community-based services across the 12 districts.

“We believe in holistic care, which is why we have doctors, psychiatrist, occupational therapist, full-time nurses and a fitness instructor among others who contribute to the treatment of our patients. Additionally, we offer aftercare services and counselling. All these services require funding,” said Hussain.

Last year, the fundraiser had 10 four-balls which they are hoping to double this year. Registration is R3200 per four-ball and R450 per cart. “We also have a wishlist that includes computers, laptops, desks, filing cabinets, fridges, microwaves, television sets, gardening tools, tables and chairs, gym equipment and heaters among other items. We need volunteers and some maintenance done as well,” said Hussain.

The organisation is also looking for sponsors for four-ball, greens and tees, and caddies among other services. For more information, contact 031 202 2241 or register at sancaprevent@mweb.co.za.
