eThekwini public transport smart hub to empower commuters

eThekwini commuters now have real-time updates on the City’s public transport bus services and incidents affecting travel following the launch of the Public Transport Information Centre with a toll-free number and email helpdesk.

THE eThekwini Municipality has taken a huge step on the road towards streamlining access to real-time information about Durban’s public transport system with the launch of the Public Transport Information Centre this week.

Located within the City’s Traffic Management Centre in the Durban CBD, the initiative is set to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accessibility for thousands of daily commuters. Overseeing the launch, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said the information hub will provide updates on the City’s public transport bus services, incidents affecting travel, and respond to queries about the City’s cashless payment system, MUVO, through a toll-free number and a public transport email helpdesk.

He said, “By integrating data from the Metro Police, the City’s public transport bus operators, and the Transport Management Centre, our centre can deliver timely, accurate updates that commuters can trust. This is about efficiency, transparency, and dignity for every person who relies on public transport in Durban.”

The launch coincided with the City’s Transport Month celebrations. Xaba underscored the human-centred focus of the initiative. “Public transport is not only about buses, taxis, and trains. At its heart, it is about people, connecting them to work, schools, healthcare, family, and recreation. Reliable information is a necessity, and this centre will ensure that commuters are informed, empowered, and able to travel with confidence,” he said.

Xaba elaborated on how the centre will run, involving Metro Police who will supply real-time incident data, transport operators who will contribute service updates, and the Traffic Management Centre which will oversee continuous system monitoring. Commuters can contact the Public Transport Information Centre via the toll-free number on 087 121 9446 or email [email protected]. Alternatively, visit www.godurban.co.za for more information.
