WATCH: Health drive brings breast cancer checks to your doorstep
Early detection saves lives. Free and discounted breast cancer screenings are available across eThekwini this October — find out where and how to access them.
AS October unfolds, eThekwini has joined the global movement of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a surge in efforts to encourage early detection.
According to the 2023 National Cancer Registry, breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women of all races in South Africa, with a lifetime risk of one in 27. An estimated 19.4 million women aged 15 and older are at risk of developing the disease. In 2013, breast cancer accounted for 0.7% of all deaths in the country.
In a joint effort to reduce the number of deaths related to the disease, CANSA along with PinkDrive, the Department of Health, and other organisations are driving the national awareness campaign surrounding early detection.
Some health organisation are stepping up to offer free or reduced‑price mammograms and breast health services in and around the eThekwini region. Janice Benecke, KZN administrator for PinkDrive, says the organisation is committed to making screening accessible for all.
