Cellphones worth R80k recovered in Durban Central

One suspect was arrested on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street while another suspect narrowly escaped being beaten by the public on Russell Street before SAPS intervened.

SEVERAL stolen cellphones, with a combined value of R80 000, were recovered during two separate SAPS operations on Friday, May 5.

In one incident, a suspect was caught with four Samsung cellphones on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street.  SAPS held observations on the street after receiving information about cellphones that were stolen during a business burglary in the area.

According to Captain Muzi Maphumulo, spokesperson for Durban Central SAPS, police spotted the suspect carrying a black plastic packet on the corner of Dr Pixley KaSeme and Gardener streets. Police approached the suspect, stopped him and searched him.

The cellphones were seized, and the suspect (36) was detained at Durban Central SAPS.
