“Sonja Gibson recently received a long-service award for an incredible 30 years of service volunteering in the uShaka Sea World Education Centre. Starting as a volunteer in 1993, at Sea World, when it was situated at the end of West Street, Sonja has shared her passion for the marine environment with learners, teachers and visitors with absolute joy,” said SAAMBR.

“Her love for the marine environment and the amazing creatures that call the ocean home is so infectious that she inspires not only the teachers, learners, and visitors, but the staff and other volunteers, as well,” said SAAMBR in their statement.

SAAMBR went on the say that the uShaka Sea World Education volunteers play an important role in sharing information on marine ecosystems and animals, the threats these ecosystems and animals face and what can be done to reduce those threats.

“We salute Sonja and all our volunteers who give so generously of their time to support the staff in connecting people with the environment. We would be hard-pressed to do so effectively without their support,” said SAAMBR.
