WATCH: Snakes of the 031 – the Boomslang
According to Nick Evans, the Boomslang spends a lot of its time in trees and poses very little threat to humans.
CAXTON Local Media has partnered with snake rescuer Nick Evans for a series called ‘Snakes of the 031’.
In this series, Nick will be introducing the most common snakes of Durban.
In the ninth part of our series, Nick speaks about the Boomslang.
“Boomslangs are commonly found in the Upper Highway area of Durban and farther north. They spend most of their time in trees to hunt, and while extremely venomous, they are docile. Drop for drop, they have the most toxic venom of any South African snake, but fortunately, the venom is slow-acting. They pose very little threat to humans,” he said.
He added that the colouration on the Boomslang can differ with males being green and black and females brown.
Evans urged residents that should they see any snake, they should contact a professional rather than approaching the snake themselves.
“The best thing to do is monitor the snake and call in a professional,” he said.
