Durban plant fair roots for indigenous plants

A number of KZN nurseries will also be present at the Indigenous Plant Fair which takes place at the Durban Botanic Gardens.

EXCITEMENT is building as the city’s longest running plant fair, the Botanical Society KZN Coastal Branch Indigenous Plant Fair, takes place on Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15, at the Durban Botanic Gardens.

The event runs from 09:00 to 16:00 on both days at the gardens’ Visitors’ Complex, and visitors can find all the plants they need to freshen up their garden this spring.

There is a selection of KZN nurseries that have been tending to an array of indigenous plants in anticipation of this year’s fair.

Berea Mail spoke to Muhammad Adamjee and Essenwood resident Di Higginson who are both a part of this year’s fair.

Adamjee, a horticulturalist for the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust, gave some insight into this weekend’s fair.

“There will be talks as well as pots, books and indigenous gardening handbooks for sale. We hope people come out and support the event, which is free and open to the public,” he said.

Talks will be held in the hall at 10:00 and 12:00 on both days. The guest speakers for this year’s event are Jenny Dean and Elsa Pooley on Saturday and Elsa Pooley and Nikki Brighton on Sunday.

Higginson, who has been involved with the fair since the early 90s, said the event helps drive home an important message.

“The fair is a great way to drive awareness on the significance of planting indigenous, especially as it helps promote biodiversity. Indigenous plants are much hardier and require less water than some alien invasive species. There will also be a selection of KZN nurseries selling an array of indigenous plants for visitors to look at,” she said.
