EDITOR – We have a right to secure shopping experiences, however I was robbed in Davenport Checkers on 2 August.
A man posing as a shopper distracted me while his accomplice took my wallet. Criminals don’t look criminal, they look ordinary. This store doesn’t protect its patrons adequately. They do not have CCTV and rely on the services of plain clothes security personnel.
At the time there was one security person on the floor. The onus is on management to protect shoppers. They will not be able to justify the expense of their recent upgrade when customers take their business elsewhere.
Checkers needs to invest in effective store security if they want to retain and grow their consumer base. If we don’t report crime then ‘low-lives’ get to have the last laugh.
We make policing impossible if we don’t inform the SAPS. This also causes under-reporting of local crime figures. Perhaps personnel and policing infrastructure could be redeployed to higher crime zones.
