We shouldn’t need to pay more

Residents can't be expected to pay more on top of their rates for services, writes a reader.

EDITOR – I would like to respond to the article in the 16 August 2013, Berea News, titled Take Back our Streets

How it is possible that a charge like this can be added to a rates account and with only a 66 per cent vote. It is ludicrous that a rate payer can be charged a separate amount on their rates account for work which the authorities should be doing in the first place.

I hope everyone takes a stand to stop this from happening. No-one knows the financial circumstances of other people and to place an additional burden onto the shoulders of people already struggling to make ends meet is appalling. Every day you go into the shops to buy something, prices have escalated. If you find yourself in a financial bind you can always cancel one of your monthly subscriptions, but with this system you won’t be able to do so, plus you have no control over the escalation costs.

The people trying to introduce this may think they are doing a good thing, but they are not, they have to look at alternative methods.
