EDITOR – I refer to the letter from Octogenarian regarding the theft of his wallet at Davenport Checkers.
I had a similar experience when the pickpocket stole a pouch containing sunglasses which he obviously hoped was a purse. There was one security person on duty whose only interest seemed to be to tie up packages from other businesses brought into the store by shoppers. I had hoped the sunglasses would be discarded in the store and enquired of management who were equally uninterested.
What I also found disturbing was that I have since heard of similar incidents from people targeted, i.e. the accomplice distracting while in two incidents handbags were opened and purses stolen, a shopping bag was rifled, a cellphone was taken. The large increases in prices at this store have not led to improvements in security or improved customer services.
I now do my shopping at Glenwood Spar where security guards are vigilant and helpful, the staff knowledgeable and courteous. It more than makes up for the extra distance I have to travel to feel safe.
