EDITOR – Your follow-up article regarding the leasing of the Selborne Road crematorium refers.
The reply from the Council is just another example of their arrogance and total disdain for the ratepayers in the city.
We requested certain information regarding this deal, which information, is our right to have. This right to information is entrenched in the constitution. If there is nothing wrong with this deal then why the reluctance to answer the questions that we put directly to the city, and to which we never even got an acknowledgement. The questions are:
Was the fact that the property was available for leasing, advertised?
Was this an unsolicited bid from Doves (Pty) Ltd?
Was the correct procedure for this type of deal, followed?
Who in the city decided on the market rental?
Who negotiated the lease on behalf of the city?
Who investigated the matter once concerns were raised, and confirmed that the rental was market related?
Two city councillors and a civic action group have asked for answers and have received a totally inappropriate response.
We intend to follow up our previous request for details and if a reasonable response is not forthcoming then we will demand the information in terms of the Access to Information Act and report this conduct by officials, to the Integrity Unit.
