EDITOR – It was only going to be a matter of time for this to happen. Yesterday a truck came hurtling down the very narrow Weston Road when its brakes failed causing the driver to knock over an electricity pole which in turn ripped off the power lines of three more, destroyed a water hydrant and sadly pinned a pedestrian under its carriage resulting in a serious injury.
For years residents have been expressing our concerns about these juggernauts taking over our neighbourhood especially in Hillier Road, Teignmouth Road and Queen Mary Avenue. Our complaints and concerns, however, have fallen on deaf ears as Metro Police continually ignore to reprimand these transport carriers who illegally frequent our roads , damaging pavements and drains and spilling fuel.
Another site to behold was vagrants helping themselves to copper wire which had been stripped from the base of the damaged poles and this right under the noses of Metro Police who were at the crash site.
On a positive note I wish to congratulate Metro Electricity for reconnecting the power within 12 hours. Our immediate expectation, because of the extent of the damage, was that we would have no electricity for at least two days. Well done to Metro Electricity.
