Cows take on the Dusi

CHOC cows will take on the Dusi Canoe Marathon to raise funds for children with cancer.

WHEN CHOC, together with young Lauren Varty, shared her journey of raising funds for children with cancer, there was an immediate reaction from the girls who were present at St Mary’s.

Two teachers, Nicky Simpson and Gail Mann, along with the deputy head girl for 2014, Sarah Cluver and fellow pupil, Chantal Botha, signed up to raise funds for CHOC.

Of course it did not take very long before the parents got involved and that’s what Sarah Cluver’s dad Guy decided to do. Guy Cluver and Sarah will be participating in Dusi canoe Marathon 2014. Chantal Botha joins her dad, Marco Botha and Nicky and Gail team up, all in doubles.

Guy has gone one step further and will donate R5 of every milkshake purchased by a learner in a St Mary’s uniform from Bellevue Café.

At the end of the Dusi Marathon, Nicky Simpson and Gail Mann will join the school’s running club and run through the streets of Kloof carrying the 103 signatures of the St Mary’s DSG girls on the canoe, supporting children with cancer.

This amazing journey will be undertaken in the COWS suit, the official fundraising arm of CHOC.

As International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day approaches on 15 February, CHOC aims to create awareness of childhood cancer by informing the public of the early warning signs.

It is important to seek medical help for early, persistent symptoms. These include white spots in the eye, a new squint, blindness and a bulging eyeball. Lumps in the abdomen, pelvis, head, neck, limbs, testes and glands, fever, loss of appetite and weight, pallor, fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding and aches in bones, back and easy fractures are all signs.

Other signs are changes in behaviour, gait and milestones, headaches and enlargement of the head.
