Karate star excels at nationals
"Theo's work ethic and discipline is second to none and I do believe he has the potential to become a world beater if he stays focused."
KZN karate superstar Theo Pillay is ranked in the top three in South Africa.
Pillay, a seasoned fighter in the national and international karate circuit, placed in the top three of the KSA nationals last weekend in Cape Town.
The current Protea team captain was however unlucky to be disqualified en route to the finals.
“I should have been crowned national champion, but for the unfortunate incident of excessive contact that resulted in my disqualification,” said Theo.
Brando Pillay, head Protea coach and Theo’s personal mentor, paid glowing tribute to the fighting machine: “Theo’s work ethic and discipline is second to none and I do believe he has the potential to become a world beater if he stays focused.”
Theo, who conducts classes in the Morningside area (Ethekwini College), will now prepare at the SKISA Academy for the forthcoming Commonwealth karate championships scheduled for early September, hosted by KSA in Durban.
President of KSA, Sonny Pillay Hanshi, expressed his delight at the high standard of karate fighting techniques on display at the said KSA nationals.
“I am very encouraged by the top class standard displayed by our KSA champions at the event that certainly augers well for the future given that karate is included in the Tokyo Olympics 2020,” he said.
