Riverside’s women’s team wins Battle of the Giants tourney

In the women’s division, Riverside Hockey Club’s first side secured a 2 - 1 victory over a young and determined Varsity College team.

RIVERSIDE Hockey Club’s (RHC) women’s team won the outdoor KZN Super League annual ‘Battle of the Giants’ tournament, hosted by KZN Hockey Association, at Queensmead Hockey Stadium this month.

Top clubs in KZN had their first men’s and ladies’ teams from Durban and surrounds compete in a round-robin tournament culminating in a final between the top two teams in each division to deem which club could claim bragging rights ahead of the season starting in May.

This year, two local hockey club teams battled it out for the top spot in the women’s division, with RHC’s first side securing a 2 – 1 victory over a young and determined Varsity College team. The RHC women’s 1st team were undefeated throughout the full day’s play to rightfully claim the title of 2019’s Battle of the Giants champions.

In the men’s division, RHC’s first team also participated in the final and a hotly contested match against Kearsney Hockey Club resulted in a 0 – 0 draw at full-time. Despite a valiant effort by the RHC team, who had a number of key players missing from their side for the tournament, the team lost 2 – 1 in a sudden death shoot-out against the Highway team that claimed top spot at the tournament.

The 2019 KZN outdoor hockey season for clubs is due to start in May and registration to sign up for a Riverside Hockey Club team is still open. Visit: www.riversidehockey.co.za or email: hockey@riversidesports.co.za.
