Rohan Meyer and Lauren Cannon take Ironman titles

Athletes started off the swim in calm conditions.

THE 2019 Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban turned out to be a special one for Rohan Meyer and Lauren Cannon, who crossed the finish line first in the men’s and women’s races respectively.

In the men’s race, Amit Katz was first out of the water and put on an amazing show with an impressive swim of 00:24:04. Rohan Meyer came out of the swim in 14th position. Not satisfied with a 14th swim leg finish, Meyer proceeded to put the hammer down on the bike, reeling in 13 athletes ahead of him to take the lead on the 24km cycle. After a great swim, Katz slumped to 39th coming into T2.

Meyer turned up the ante, putting distance between him and the other age groupers as he made his way to first over the finish line. Joining him on the podium was Chris Bruchhausen who finished six minutes behind and Donovan Geldenhuys who finished second last year, dropping to third this year.

In the women’s race, professional triathlete, Annah Watkinson, joined the age-group race and crossed the finish line first. However, the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban event is an age-group event so Watkinson was not recognised as the official winner. Exiting the swim first was Kirsty Hodgson in 00:29:5. With Lauren Cannon exiting behind her in 00:30:17. Both ladies surprisingly beating Watkinson out the water.

Coming off the bike leg into T2, the standings were tightly contested with Cannon taking the lead followed by Toinette van Niekerk in second. At this point Watkinson was far ahead of the age-groupers and looked comfortable. Cannon would maintain her lead crossing the finish line hand in hand with her husband, followed by Eulali Gouws who finished three minutes behind her. Natasha Gorrie managed to hold on to that third spot after a tough day out.
