UKZN hosts Friendship Games

PeacePlayers South Africa continued to bridge racial divides at the 2019 Friendship Games.

PEACEPLAYERS South Africa (PPSA), hosted the Friendship Games at University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Howard College, Old Mutual Sports Hall on 24 and 25 August.

PPSA has used the sport of basketball to unite, educate and inspire youth in communities where there is a social divide since 2001 and was founded on the premise that “children who can learn to play together can learn to live together”. PPSA hosted more than 170 high school participants and 60 youth mentor coaches from Durban and KZN areas at the two-day overnight Games. On Saturday there were basketball, leadership and team building stations along with games and guest speakers. On Sunday there was the 3rd Annual Girls’ Basketball Festival tournament to commemorate Women’s Month, along with a Boys’ Three-Point Shooting Contest.

Westville Girls’ High School won a very competitive championship game versus LIV Village School. The entire game was thrilling and came down to the last seconds.

Douglas Nedab from PPSA said PeacePlayers currently has programmes at 22 primary and high schools in the Durban area while facilitating two sessions per week. Additionally, they participate in the Cross Community Peace League throughout the year. “Once children graduate from the programme they are eligible for the Coaches Development Programme to be coach mentors in their community. These mentors facilitate life skills sessions through the sport two times a week in their schools and once a week in the Cross Community Peace League,” he said.

PPSA programmes produce young adults with workplace-related skills, preparing them for the future as effective, constructive and productive leaders that are ready for permanent employment.
