Good win by Quins

Quins beat by five wickets, gaining four log points for the win and one log point for doing so within 40 overs.

HARLEQUINS Cricket Club was engaged in three league matches on Sunday, 2 February.

The first team fielded a strong team and from the onset perceived themselves to be favourites to win an encounter against log leaders Dawn Heights from Stanger. Opening bowler Kevin Kettle delivered with too much pace for some of the league’s top batsmen, removing Dawn Heights’ opening batter in the first over, caught out by fielder Sylvester Sauli. Kevin then removed the other opening batsman in the third over by clean bowling him. The delivery thereafter was a fast full-lengthed ball which bowled Raj Verna, leaving Dawn Heights in tatters at 13 runs for the loss of three wickets in the third over of the match.

Quins’ other opener Sauli, delivered with good pace but was too short and too wide of the stumps in his first two overs conceding 15 runs off his first two overs. He then found good rhythm and control in his remaining effort returning statistics of seven overs 27 runs capturing a solitary wicket during his endeavour.

Dawn Heights consolidated between the fifth and 23rd over when they were 107 for five wickets, at which stage the match was fairly evenly poised.

Medium paced off cut bowler Mohamed Patel was splendid in the latter juncture of Dawn Height’s innings and captured two wickets for 15 runs in six overs with his unorthodox front on high action. Kevin Kettle captured four wickets for 31 runs in a superb spell of 10 overs of pure fast bowling. Dawn Heights capitulated in the 40th over at 147 runs.

In response Quins’ top order coped well in the batting-friendly conditions. Sheldon Spindler was trapped leg before wicket for 31 runs off Comfort Shange. Brandon De Million was bowled for 34 runs, and Jaques Strydom was adjudicated leg before wicket for 40 runs. Momedtlaha Motalha was undefeated with a score on 18 runs when Quins surpassed Dawn Height’s tally with just five wickets being lost, earning themselves a victory by five wickets, and gaining four log points for the win and one log point for doing so within 40 overs.

Other team results: Quins’ 5ths vs Newlands: Quins 5 lost by two wickets. Quins’ U13s vs Simplex U13s: Quins lost this 30 over youth league match.

Six of Harlequins’ seven teams will be engaged in league match activity during the upcoming weekend. The annual prize giving and a Sixers competition will be held during the first weekend of April.
