A jazz tribute to Ronny Jordan

Late Durban jazz legend Ronny Jordan to be honoured at tribute concert.

DURBAN jazz musicians pay tribute to legendary guitarist, Ronny Jordan, on Sunday 29 June at Pharoez Lounge at The Royal Hotel, 267 Anton Lembede Street, Durban at 1pm.

Four months after Ronny Jordan passed away, Durban-based guitarist Mthunzi Mchunu formed a tribute band consisting of some of Durban’s great jazz musicians, to celebrate the music of this legendary guitarist.

The jazz guitarist who died aged 51, was a gifted self-taught performer of warmth, humility and spirituality, who became famous for crossing a thoroughly worldly hurdle when he turned a jazz instrumental into a pop hit.

He is known for his cult dance floor success and for being one of the key figures in the 1990’s acid-jazz movement.

A week before Ronny Jordan suddenly passed away in January 2014 he met up with guitarist Mthunzi Mchunu at a Durban club where Mchunu was the resident and Jordan was playing that night.

This was the second time the two met, a year before this, Mchunu attended a workshop at UKZN facilitated by Jordan.

The tribute band will also consist of respected pianist Burton Naidoo, drummer Shaun Petersen (who played with Ronny Jordan for years) and bassist Brayden Hore. They will perform Ronny Jordan’s greatest hits.

Pharoez is a lounge with a unique feel in that incorporates most tasteful styles of music from deep house to jazz.

Opened at The Royal Hotel on 1 June this year, it plans to host two-weekly jazz events. Following a live jazz performance, the events will close on Sunday with the best jazz from Pharoez resident DJ.

Free entrance. For table bookings contact 031 831 6800.
