DON’T miss a two-day send off concert for two of the 11-strong, Umkhumbane Jazz Ensemble (UJE) who have decided to retire as active musos due to age and their unstable health.
The concert takes place at the Playhouse Company on Friday 3 May from 7pm to 9pm and on Saturday 4 May 3pm to 5pm.
The line-up includes Ilima Band, Mthobisi Mthalane, SimWave from “Thee Legacy”, Royal Son & Gabriel YoungStar “DJ” from SABC 1 & 2.
The retiring musos are tenor saxophone, Moses Sefatsa and lead vocalist Adolph Kunene. Sefatsa is the most senior member of the band and has been playing the same tenor saxophone he purchased in 1955. He is arguably one of the survivors of the early Durban jazz experience of the 50’s.
Meanwhile, 85-year-old golden voice Kunene is a living soccer legend who has dedicated most of his life playing soccer, singing and sharing his skills with the township youth.
The concert is a fundraiser and part of the revenue will be given as a gift to these legends as a token of appreciation to their families for the sacrifices they have made.
