Residents urged to avoid taking shortcut

Villa Liza residents are urged to avoid isolated shortcuts through the open veld as police report rising incidents of crime

An open veld in Barry Marais Road, between Villa Liza and Dawn Park, is a hotspot for crime and the Dawn Park SAPS urges residents to avoid using this area as a shortcut.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula said pedestrians using this route have been targets of robberies, muggings and even sexual assault.

“During the most recent incident, on January 19, a man resisted and was murdered.

“The victim, who was in his 40s, was stabbed in the upper body multiple times while walking from Dawn Park to Villa Liza, at around 19:00,” she said.

“Reports indicate the perpetrators are often two or three men, who have distinct accents, suggesting they may be foreign nationals.

“Their attacks are swift and calculated and they become increasingly aggressive if the victim hesitates or resists handing over valuables, particularly cellphones,” she said.

Sergeant Nkemeleng Mabula speaks to a resident, emphasising the importance of choosing safer routes.

In several cases, the attackers have brandished weapons, such as knives and firearms, threatening to harm or kill their victims.

Mabula said the criminals specifically target people walking alone early in the morning, at around 06:00, and late afternoon after 16:00.

“The perpetrators hide in poorly lit areas behind structures, bushes or parked vehicles, then ambush unsuspecting victims.

“The area is far from residential homes, making it nearly impossible for cries for help to be heard.”

Acting on widespread concern from the community about these incidents, the Dawn Park SAPS recently held a special crime prevention and awareness campaign in the area.

“We cannot emphasise enough the importance of avoiding isolated areas,” said Mabula.

“Residents must exercise extreme caution and choose safer, busier routes whenever possible. Stick to well-lit, populated roads and walk in groups whenever possible.”

Suggestions include:

• Forming walking groups to ensure strength in numbers.

• Reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.

• Educating family members, especially children, about the dangers of isolated shortcuts.

Mabula also announced plans to increase patrols in the area to deter criminal activity and ensure a more secure environment for all.

Tips for pedestrians
• Avoid walking alone, especially early in the morning or late at night.

• Use alternative routes, even if they are longer but busier and better lit.

• Stay alert and avoid distractions like headphones or excessive phone use.

• Always inform someone about your route and expected arrival time.

For emergencies or to report suspicious activities, residents can contact 011 862 1117/071 765 6940 or call 10111.
