Constable Johannes Msimanga, the spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, said the event taught the community about GBV and focused on poverty and financial dependence.
“The gathering was attended by senior citizens from the Ramaphosa informal settlement, who added valuable perspectives to the discussion.
“Following presentations, a community dialogue allowed the participants to share their views on GBV. This interactive session fostered engagement and encouraged open discussions about challenges and solutions.”
Msimanga emphasised the significance of community involvement in addressing GBV.
“We cannot combat crime alone. We rely on the support and co-operation of the community to help us keep Reiger Park safe,” he noted, highlighting the importance of collaborations in maintaining safety and promoting awareness.

He said the event concluded with Umelusi Osiza Abantu stressing the need for women to prioritise independence and self-sufficiency in relationships.
“The organisation encouraged women not to tolerate violence simply because they are financially supported, advocating for financial independence as a key factor in reducing vulnerability to abuse.”
