Beloved foreman gunned down next to N12

Brian Sekwale was shot and killed while on his way to work on Golden Drive.

The owners of Plastique Injection Moulders in Golden Drive are mourning the sudden death of their day shift foreman, who was gunned down while on his way to work on February 5 on the N12 westbound, near Snake Road.

Brian Sekwale of Daveyton had worked for the company for 17 years.

He is described as a dedicated and free-spirited man.

According to Benoni SAPS spokesperson Captain Nomsa Sekele, the deceased was dropped off by a taxi along the N12 at around 5:30 on that day.

His workplace is only about 10 metres from where he was dropped off and it was within this short last commute that Sekwale was shot and killed.

“He sustained three gunshot wounds to the upper body and was robbed of his cellphone and a bag.

“A case of murder has been opened at the Benoni SAPS,” said Sekele.

She added they cannot rule out the perpetrators of this crime being illegal miners, who are running a massive operation in Golden Drive.

In a bid to crack down on illegal mining in this area, police have held numerous operations in which zama zamas were arrested and illegal mining structures destroyed.

Sekwale’s employers, who wished to remain anonymous, said they feel hopeless and lost following his tragic death.

“We have known him for years. Brian assisted in building our business when we started.

“Brian always had a smile on his face. He was my husband’s right-hand man.

“His death is such a great loss to the company and his 13-year-old son is devastated,” said the employer, adding she is concerned about the safety of their other staff who use the same route to work in the morning.
