Dog poisonings on the rise warns security company
The public is advised to seek immediate medical attention if they suspect their dog has been poisoned.

Pet owners are warned that dog poisonings are on the rise.
This is according to Legendary Guardians Exclusive Protection’s operations manager, Deon Graaff, who said they’ve noted an increase since mid-December in areas such as Impala Park, Atlasville, Beyers Park and Boksburg North.
“The modus operandi is to poison dogs and then about a week later break into houses. These criminals will target any dog that may derail their plans, even a neighbour’s dog, for example.
“Incidents are happening about twice a week and occur during the day and night. Legendary Guardians officers have “post-poison kits” in their vehicles that can be used as an emergency treatment.
“I recently responded to six incidents to administer the “poison kit”, which helped to save the dogs. It’s all about timing. If you report it quickly enough, you will be able to save the animal.
“We hope other security companies will consider offering the same type of assistance,” Graaff added.
He further expressed his gratitude to Pet Rescue Kits for sponsoring the kits to Legendary Guardians.
Graff may be contacted on 076 824 2450 for more information regarding the “post-poison kits”.
SPCA comments
Boksburg SPCA secretary Sue Beadon said the society hasn’t received any reports of dog poisonings recently.
According to her, these happen in spurts, with criminals targeting one suburb before moving on to another.
“The best way to protect your dog from being poisoned is to keep it inside or at least away from the yard facing the street. Even if you keep your dog inside, check your property for pieces of meat, like sausages.”
Beadon reiterated that “post-poison kits” are meant to slow down the process of the dog digesting the poison, and the animal should still be taken to a vet as soon as possible.
Should your pet be poisoned, these veterinary practices offer after-hour services:
• Boksburg Animal Hospital: 011 917 9978 or 082 458 8144.
• Alberton Veterinary Clinic: 011 869 7258.
• Germiston Veterinary Clinic: 072 957 7443.
• Rynfield Veterinary Hospital: 011 849 8811
.Boksburg North SAPS station commander Colonel Mack Mngomezulu said no cases have been reported to them.
“We urge residents to report such incidents so that an investigation can be launched.”
