Man nabbed for power infrastructure vandalism

The growing incidents of theft and destruction of the city’s electricity infrastructure costs the metro multimillions of rand per year.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on February 17 in connection with vandalism of the city’s electricity infrastructure in Dawn Park.

The arrest came after the EMPD intervention unit found the man in Olive Street (Van Dyk Park), in possession of suspected stolen cables, believed to have been stripped from the public infrastructure in the township.

“It is reported that a resident in the area saw the suspect pulling out copper cables from a streetlight and immediately called for assistance. Residents and private security companies responded and pounced on the suspect. The police were called to the scene and arrested the suspect,” explained the EMPD.

The suspect is facing charges of possession of suspected stolen property and malicious damage to essential infrastructure. He is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
