Man dies, wife injured after crash leads to roadside shooting
The investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
A man the police identified as Phumelele Jikwayo was fatally shot and his wife critically injured during a shooting on Main Reef Road, near the Angelo informal settlement, in the early hours of June 5.
According to Captain Nelda Sekgobela, the SAPS spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni district, the couple were travelling in a white Toyota Hilux when a vehicle rear-ended them opposite a shop near the informal settlement.
“The deceased stopped his car and approached the other driver. He then phoned a relative he was going to meet to inform him of their delay due to the accident. The couple were reportedly on their way to Polokwane for lobola negotiations,” said Sekgobela.
He made the call at 03:28.
“While still on the phone, the relative reportedly heard gunshots, followed by the sound of a vehicle speeding off. When he tried to call back, the phone was off,” she added.
The relative immediately called the police.
The police arrived to find Jikwayo lying at the roadside with fatal gunshot wounds.
His wife was shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The deceased’s bakkie was later found abandoned in the Angelo informal settlement.
The police are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and hijacking.
