FOLLOW UP: Families angry as year passes with no arrests in Reiger Park tragedy

Shaylin Fortuin, Zuriel Minnar, and Alveren Joko were gunned down, and families say police still haven’t arrested the suspect.

It has been a year since Shaylin Fortuin (19), Zuriel Minnaar (17), and Al-Veren Joko (20) were gunned down in Reiger Park, yet the families of the victims say justice has not been served.

Despite clear evidence and multiple witnesses, no arrests have been made, leaving the families frustrated and in anguish.
The three young men were killed on October 12, 2024, while socialising at a friend’s house.

According to Charlene Daniels, an aunt of one of the victims, the shooting followed a verbal altercation in Tedstonville, Germiston, though none of the victims were physically involved.
“They were at my house, socialising and swimming. It was just words, nothing physical. The suspect told them he would come back for them. Later, everyone returned to Reiger Park to relax, and less than an hour after, he showed up and started shooting.”

The suspect allegedly entered the yard where the boys were gathered. The father of the house was asleep inside, while the mother was sitting outside with the children.

“He opened fire while the kids were just sitting there. Some of the victims weren’t even part of the earlier argument. Innocent lives were taken,” she said.

The families says there is CCTV footage, multiple witnesses and clear identification of the suspect, yet the Reiger Park Police Station has made no arrests.
“We have followed up repeatedly. We were only told that the suspect had been sentenced for another case. Nothing has been done about this one. We feel abandoned and frustrated.”

The aunt also described the tense hours leading up to the shooting.
“My husband was friends with the suspect. That evening, he threatened the boys after the argument. We even got them into the bakkie to leave because we saw he was angry. He later calmed down and left with his wife, but less than an hour later after they left we got a call that children were dead.”

Some of the victims were the only children in their families. For the relatives, October 12 has become a painful reminder of both loss and inaction.
“We just want justice. We won’t stop until something is done. A year has passed, and still nothing. It’s devastating,” she said.

The families are calling on authorities to reopen the investigation, act on the evidence, and finally hold the suspect accountable for the senseless killings of Shaylin, Zuriel, and Alveren.
“The last communication we received was on September 15, but it was not informative, they just said they would get back to the parents, but they never did.”
