Police say investigation ongoing as Reiger Park families demand justice

Police promise progress in Reiger Park case, but relatives of the victims remain in anguish over delays

Reiger Park SAPS say the investigation into the October 12, 2024, shooting of Shaylin Fortuin (19), Zuriel Minnaar (17), and Al-Veren Joko (20) in Reiger Park is ongoing, with witness statements recorded and the docket set to be submitted to the courts.

Constable Johannes Msimanga confirmed that the families have been kept updated by the branch commander. “A witness statement has been taken, and the docket will be presented in court for a decision. Further statements from additional witnesses still need to be collected,” he said.

The police noted that the suspect was involved in another unrelated case, which has affected the timeline for arrests in this matter.
Despite these assurances, the victims’ families remain frustrated over the lack of arrests.

“I’m waiting patiently for something positive to come since we involved the media. We’re hoping the article will prompt the police to do what they get paid to do. Honestly, our children are constantly on my mind.
“I’m not even their mother, but every time I think of what happened I become sad. Life gave us a raw deal,” said Charlene Daniels, aunt of one of the victims.

Daniels said all three boys were always at her house, and she is not comfortable with having people over anymore.
“This incident was unnecessary. It was really about someone who didn’t think about how his actions would affect people’s lives, whom he could basically call family.

“I’m hurt every day. I think about what I could have done differently to avoid this, and I wish I could turn back the clock. The worst part is I can’t change a thing, and that is what hurts the most.”

The three young men were shot while socialising at a friend’s house in Reiger Park. Daniels explained that the killings followed a verbal argument in Tedstonville, Germiston, though the victims had no physical involvement.

For families, the anniversary of the shooting remains a painful reminder of loss and slow justice. Family members have expressed concern over delays in the case, urging SAPS to prioritise the investigation.
