FOLLOW UP: Reiger Park child (11) continues brave fight against rare condition

The family sought immediate medical attention and after extensive tests, Ashtonique was diagnosed with aplastic anemia—a condition that has since severely impacted her life.

For 11-year-old Ashtonique Baron of Reiger Park, the new year signifies a continued fight for her health.

She has been battling a rare and serious condition known as aplastic anaemia since August 2024.

The illness, which prevents her bone marrow from producing enough red and white blood cells, has turned her life upside down and left her family grappling with emotional and financial strain.

It all started in the last week of August when Ashtonique suddenly fell gravely ill.

Her grandmother, Milda Blackway, noticed troubling symptoms that made breathing difficult for Ashtonique.

The family sought immediate medical attention and after extensive tests, the child was diagnosed with aplastic anaemia.

Fragile

For Ashtonique’s mother, Veronique Blackway, the past few months have been a whirlwind of hospital stays and medical appointments.

“She’s still ill and has to be admitted to hospital every week,” she said.

While many families celebrated the festive season with joy and togetherness, the Blackways’ festive season was subdued.

“We didn’t have a good festive season. Ashtonique was in and out of the hospital. Even during family gatherings, precautions had to be taken to protect her fragile immune system.

“She is in hospital and has been in isolation. We have to watch over her constantly.”

The family has made the tough choice to explore homeschooling for Ashtonique, who is set to begin Grade Six this year.

“She couldn’t complete school last year, even though she passed the grade.

“However, returning to a traditional classroom isn’t feasible for her,” she said.

Costs

Ashtonique’s condition has brought not only emotional challenges but also financial strain.

“The medical bills and transport costs keep rising. We have to travel from Boksburg to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for her treatments, and the expenses have become overwhelming.

“Ashtonique can’t live her life like other children. We just want her to have a chance at a better life.”

Despite the challenges, the Blackway family remains hopeful and determined to provide Ashtonique with the care she needs.

They are contacting the community for support to help cover medical expenses, transport fees and homeschooling costs.
