De Vos resigns as ERU chairperson

The chairperson did not take this decision to step away from the club lightly.

East Rand United (ERU) chairperson Marius de Vos recently announced his resignation with immediate effect.

De Vos joined the club in 2014 as the secretary and took over as the chairperson in 2017 following a year break in 2016.

The chairperson said he did not take this decision to step away from the club lightly.

“Over the past two years, I have worked tirelessly to drive the club forward, always keeping the best interests of our members, players, and the community at heart. Unfortunately, despite my efforts, I have come to realise that my vision for the club’s future is no longer aligned with that of the management.

“As chairperson, I have always strived to promote a culture of inclusivity, transparency, and progress. However, I have faced resistance and lack of support from gatekeepers well-known in the club, which has hindered my ability to effectively lead the club. I have tried to address these issues through various channels, but unfortunately, we have not been able to find common ground.

“I am grateful for the support and dedication of some members and players who have worked tirelessly to make our club a success.”

De Vos said he will always cherish the memories experiences gained during his time at ERU and wishes the club all the best for the future.

The club’s treasurer, Carly Loxton, said De Vos’s resignation is a huge loss for the club.

“He worked hard to get players to away games and organised fund-raising functions for the club.”

The treasurer said the club will now have a special AGM to nominate a chairperson or the union will have to step in to assist the club until its AGM takes place in October or November as per usual.

Lack of resources
After United parted with the club’s main sponsor in 2020, the club has been struggling financially.

“Without funds, it’s even difficult to arrange transport for players to get to the games. We managed to keep afloat with donations we received, but haven’t managed to secure a sponsor,” said De Vos.

Furthermore, the club have been struggling without electricity due to illegal connections. It has been a problem for years.
“The lack of lights made it difficult for the players to train at night. We have tried everything, from using car lights and even a generator.
“We had to train at PG Park, which is Boksburg Rugby Club’s home grounds. Luckily the metro recently restored the electricity at the club,” he added.

Merlin League
It was recently announced that the men from Reiger Park will no longer take part in the Valke Peregrine League as the club was demoted to the Merlin League.
Loxton said this decision was made by the Valke.

“Our performance over the last three years was not good for our reputation,” she said.

She said they will meet with the union soon to discuss the way forward.
ERU will take on VUT in Reiger Park on May 18.
