“Speedsters who think our roads are raceways learnt the hard way when recently 25 were arrested for exceeding the speed limit in Brakpan and Benoni,” said the spokesperson for the EMPD, Wilfred Kgasago.
Ten drivers were nabbed on Sunday morning, nine on Saturday and six on Friday. The special speed operations were conducted between 6am and 10am on those days.
The drivers who were arrested on Sunday were travelling on the Heidelberg Road, between Kaapmuiden and Dube roads, which is an 80km/h zone.
The highest speed clocked was 138km/h, by a driver in a VW sedan, claiming to be on his way to work.
The other nine offenders registered speeds of between 131km/h and 118 km/h. On Saturday morning, on the Heidelberg Road, between Mans and Koot roads, which has a speed limit of 100km/h, seven risk-takers were nabbed, with the highest registering 149km/h on a Honda motorcycle, claiming he was rushing to Carnival City.
The other six arrested drivers clocked speeds of between 145km/h and 132km/h.
On the same day, in Benoni, on Van Dyk Road, between Falkirk and Aberdeen roads, a 60km/h zone, a driver in an Audi sedan was arrested for doing 98km/h.
Friday morning’s special operation netted six drivers on Heidelberg Road, between Mans and Koot roads.
This stretch of road has a 100km/h speed limit. The highest speed registered was that of a man on a Kawasaki motorcycle, caught doing 148km/h, citing that he was late for work as the reason.
The other five arrested drivers registered speeds of between 132km/h and 137km/h.
“All the arrested drivers were able to raise bail of between R500 and R1 000 and avoided sleeping in jail; they will all appear in the Brakpan or Benoni Magistrates Courts soon, to face reckless and negligent driving charges,” said Kgasago.
