Residents are cautioned to ensure their homes are properly protected against criminal invasion at all times.
The number of house break-ins has escalated drastically over the past few weeks and although the police are doing everything in their power, residents are urged to be more vigilant.
Last weekend alone saw eight house break-ins taking place.
This is only one less than the previous weekend and not counting cases that are reported during the week.
Positive news, however, is that the SAPS is currently following up on useful information received from the public.
“We have good reason to believe that four male suspects, driving a old model white Toyota Corolla could be responsible for many of the incidents that have been reported lately,” said Capt Joubert.
The car has black mag wheels and has been spotted in Brakpan-North and Dalpark Six.
“The suspects will go to a house, knock on the doors and once they are sure that no one is at home they will break in, “explained Capt Joubert
“We are urging the public to be on the lookout for this vehicle but also any other suspicious looking cars or people,” said Capt Joubert.
On Friday, last week burglars targeted homes in Abramowithz Street, Sherwood Gardens; Middle Road, Rand Collieries and 10th Avenue, Withok.
On Saturday five cases were reported to the Brakpan police. The homes that were broken into are situated in Mynhardt Avenue, Minnebron; Malan Street, Sherwood Gardens; Kiepersol Crescent, Dalpark; Krinkhout Street, Dalpark and West Road, Sonneveld.
“It is very clear that the break-ins are not restricted to a specific area in town. It is happening all over,” said Capt Joubert.
“People must make sure it is as difficult as possible for criminals to get inside their homes Make sure you lock your belongings away safely,” added Joubert. ”
Joubert told the Herald outside gates must be locked, as must all security gates and doors.
“Windows must be tightly secured; a window left open just a fraction is an open invitation to burglars,” he said.
“If possible, install security lights and an alarm system.”
Residents who have information to assist the police in their effort to curb these break-ins can contact Capt Peet van der Schyff on 011 744-7172.
