The City of Ekurhuleni will again host the 27th instalment of the prestigious National Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards.

Ekurhuleni is calling on all artists of all ages who produce an array of art works to become part of this contemporary fine art competition.

Entries open on August 19, 20 and 21, from 9am until 7pm, at the Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre, Mooifontein Road, Birchleigh North Kempton Park.

Entries will also be accepted at the Boksburg Library on August 20, from 9am until 4pm, the Springs Art Gallery on August 19 and 20, from 9am until 7pm, and at the Katlehong Art Centre on August 19, from 9am until 4pm.

The entry fee is R50 per artwork.

The works of art must have been completed within the past 12 months.

The adjudicators for the 2014 Thami Mnyele Fine Arts Awards competition are Pieter Swanepoel, Nontobeko Ntombela, Leanne Engelberg, Louise Kritzinger, and Richman Buthelezi.

The selected artworks will be exhibited at the opening function and prizegiving ceremony at the Coen Scholtz Recreation Centre, from September 20 to October 12.

“A competition of this nature serves as a platform to encourage artists to transcend limitations, reconfigure and manipulate contemporary cultural, social and political landscapes.

“It’s a platform for artists to employ various ways to express metaphors, and their aesthetic sensibility to reflect the world we live in,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

The City of Ekurhuleni is privileged to associate this national fine arts competition with acclaimed resistance artist Thami Mnyele, who gave a voice to the nation through his God given talent.

This year’s competition will be presented in collaboration with the Lizamore and Associates Mentorship Programme.

Lizamore and Associates gallery has been showing the work of new and established contemporary South African artists for over 10 years.

The total prize money amounts to R100 000.
