Nyaope dealer nabbed by EMPD

Members of the EMPD'S Specialised Services Unit arrested a suspected nyoape dealer in Brakpan yesterday (Sunday).

The 28-year-old man was nabbed during a roadblock along the N17 (R23 turnoff) and was found with 109 packets of nyaope in his possession.

Nyaope, which is also known as whoonga, is a highly addictive drug reportedly containing heroin and HIV antiretroviral drugs.

Other ingredients can include rat poison and washing detergent.

The powder is smoked with dagga.

“The alert metro police officers noticed a man alight a Volkswagen Polo some distance from the roadblock,” said EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago.

“He was carrying a bag and the officers decided to pursue him; they came across the 109 small packets of the drug in his bag.”

The seized drugs have an estimated street value of R3000.

The man, who hails from Secunda, was arrested and faces charges of being in possession of an illicit substance.

In addition, the EMPD issued 111 fines for various offences and impounded one car, which did not have its registration plates and licence displayed.

“Six unroadworthy vehicles were also discontinued,” added Kgasago.
