Ekurhuleni pensioners to receive disaster safety tips
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will educate its senior citizens on how to be safe when disaster strikes during the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) to be held at the Germiston City Hall on Monday, October 13.

IDDR is observed every year on that day and is an initiative of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), which is responsible for supporting the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction.
The Metro’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services Department has aligned its activities with those of the UNISDR and will, on the day, raise awareness on issues of disaster reduction and disaster management within communities.
This year’s theme “Resilience is for Life” places the spotlight on older members of society, including their needs and what they contribute to better understanding and planning of disaster risks in their communities.
The elderly will be educated about how to plan for a fire, plan an emergency escape route, actions to reduce risk of flooding and how to make an emergency phone call during disaster.
Furthermore, they will have an edutainment session whereby they will watch plays on floods and fire.
According to EMM spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, this year’s day will highlight the need for a more inclusive approach in reducing disaster risk and recognise the critical role that older persons can play in resilience-building, through their experience and knowledge.
“This year’s theme is an overarching one,” he said.
“The intention is to demonstrate and raise awareness of the roles and challenges of elderly people, during and after disasters.
“Fire causes more deaths each year than any other type of disaster.
“This need not happen if you make your home a safer place, whether you reside in an informal settlement, a formal township or suburb.”
Gadebe added that it is the responsibility of every adult to teach their children and loved ones on what actions to take in case of a fire.
Emergency contact numbers in Ekurhuleni are 10177 or 011 458 0911.
