Rainstorms damage Metrorail’s infrastructure

Heavy rain storms accompanied by lightning severely damaged the railway infrastructure including the signals, power supply and tracks of Metrorail services throughout the province.

The rail tracks have been flooded rendering it extremely difficult to run the train service.

The corridors severely affected by the signal power failure, floods and soil erosion are in Pretoria, Mabopane, De Wildt and Saulsville.

Gauteng West and East signal power supply failures affect mainly trains to Naledi, Vereeniging, Oberholzer, Daveyton, Springs, Kwesini and Germiston.

Currently there is very minimal train movement in the corridors mentioned above as the safety of commuters takes priority.

To ensure that the operational service adheres to safety regulations, Metrorail has introduced manual train authorisation systems as an alternative train movement method which by its nature takes time and is very complex especially due to the old infrastructure.

Metrorail management calls upon all commuters to be patient and allow time for technical teams that are working around the clock to restore the service back to normal.
