Beware of online fraudsters

The resident discovered he had been defrauded when he went to withdraw money two days later and found there were no funds in the account.

Brakpan police have warned residents to be careful when selling goods online.

This follows a recent incident, in which a Station Road resident was robbed of his vehicle.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the resident had advertised his vehicle, a white Toyota Condor, for sale on a popular online classified site.

He was then contacted by a man who agreed to purchase the vehicle.

The resident requested that the money be deposited into his niece’s bank account and a payment confirmation from the bank was received.

The vehicle and papers were then collected on behalf of the buyer.

The resident discovered he had been defrauded when he went to withdraw money two days later and found there were no funds in the account.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, urged residents to always practice good judgement when buying or selling online.

“Go with your gut instinct: if something doesn’t feel right, it’s probably because it’s not,” he said.

When selling goods, he advised residents to check with the bank whether the funds had cleared before handing over any items.
