Still ‘finger lickin’ good’ after 40 years

KFC Brakpan celebrates 40 years in business with a new look.

Kentucky Fried Chicken Brakpan is celebrating 40 years in business.

In September, this year, the familiar square KFC outlet was completely revamped to make way for the newly constructed store.

This took the form of the new “My Best Friend’s Kitchen” design.

The aesthetic is inspired by the local contemporary design of the inner city redevelopment of Johannesburg, and is being used throughout South Africa.

The interior has new, warm, inviting colours, with the natural use of wood and tiling and the latest LED lighting concept.

The exterior also has a completely new, inviting and warmer look, with new signage, dark grey cladding and timber tiles, with a “Welcome” wall that flanks the entrance.

With the new image has come the New Fusion Service on the front counter, complete with new Point of Sale Systems (cash registers) and new screens installed, which will enable much faster service with less queuing time.

Darrel Smith, director of the KFC Brakpan branch, has been the franchisee since the store was opened in 1976.

KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, who began selling chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky, USA.

Sanders identified the potential of restaurant franchising and the first KFC franchise store opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1952.

Branding himself ”Colonel Sanders”, the founder became a prominent figure of American cultural history, and his image remains widely used in the KFC advertising.

In 1964 he sold the company to a group of investors and, in 1970, KFC was sold to spirits distributor Hublien, which was taken over by the RJ Renolds food and tobacco conglomerate, which was later sold to PepsiCo.

In 1997, PepsiCo spun off its restaurant division as Tricon Global Restaurants, which changed its name to Yum Brands in 2002.

Colonel Sanders died at the age of 90, in 1980, only nine years after the first KFC was established in South Africa, in 1971.

The Colonel would have been proud of the KFC Brakpan outlet.

Despite the many other fast food franchises that have emerged over the years, KFC still remains a firm favourite.

In celebration of the store’s 40th birthday, KFC Brakpan has a variety of specials on offer.

In-store entertainment this weekend includes a jumping castle, balloons and face-painting.
