Spurs fly into second

Spurs went on to score a fourth, with the hosts scoring a late consolation goal.

Brakpan Spurs first-team leapt into second place in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) league on Saturday.

This is after they beat Bedfordview 4-2 in an away match. The match, however, did not start well for Spurs as they went a goal behind within five minutes of kick-off.

Falling behind seemed to be what Spurs needed as they quickly got into the game creating chances. They got the equaliser from a corner kick, with Zakhele Kunene hitting a spectacular volley.

The Brakpan side continued to attack, with Bedfordview’s defence committing numerous errors at the back.

One of those mistakes saw a shot by Sidumo Munene handled by a defender in the 18-yard box, giving the referee no choice but to point to the penalty spot.

Nkululeko Sidzamba slotted in from 12 yards to give Spurs a 2-1 lead at half-time. The Brakpan team picked up where they left off in the second period and it came as no surprise when Kunene scored his team’s third goal.

Spurs went on to score a fourth, with the hosts scoring a late consolation goal. Spurs are now four points behind log leaders Alberton, but manager Jabulani Munene believes they can still win the league.

They have a bye this week and the next. This will see them getting six points as they were supposed to face two teams that have pulled out of the league due to the coronavirus.

Spurs u-17 side was held to a goalless draw by Napoli in Bedfordview on Sunday.
