Spaza shops continue to be raided in law enforcement operations
Operations will continue weekly to ensure compliance and the health and safety of citizens.
The Brakpan SAPS, in collaboration with Ekurhuleni Environmental Health Department and the CPF conducted an operation, alongside pest control officers and Crime Prevention Wardens on November 26.
The parade was held at the police station, conducted by Vispol commander, Colonel Robert Makopo. The operation is intended to enforce compliance of shops that sell food.
With food poisoning becoming a national problem, and having resulted in illness and sudden death of innocent citizens, including children, SAPS and relevant stakeholders deemed it a priority to ensure that the current statistics with regards to food poisoning are lowered.
During the operation, 18 supermarkets and spaza shops were visited, of which 14 were issued with notices of closure by the health department. Unhealthy, expired, rotten, unlabeled and repackaged foodstuffs were confiscated by the health inspectors and destroyed in the waste truck.
Pest control officers also requested fumigation certificates from shop owners, while health inspectors stopped a bread delivery truck, and prohibited the delivery due to the truck not having a food transporting permit, and being dirty.
SAPS and stakeholders will conduct compliance operations every week to prevent incidents of food poisoning within the Brakpan area.
