Beloved Macaw rescued from palm tree on Prince George Avenue

The macaw was rescued by Fidelity ADT services, much to the relief of the Du Toit family.

During flight training on February 4, Zazu, a beloved young blue and gold macaw, escaped and flew into a palm tree on Prince George Avenue in Brenthurst.

Zazu’s owner, Jóvan du Toit, has been training Zazu to fly to him inside his home in exchange for treats.

Last Tuesday afternoon, however, Zazu unexpectedly manoeuvred out the back door and flew about 30m to 40m.

Eventually, Zazu found his way to one of the palm trees in front of Jóvan’s house, where he became stranded.

Jóvan made several unsuccessful attempts to coax Zazu out of the tree.

A family friend, Theo Bezuidenhout, who works at the fire department, directed the family to Fidelity ADT fire services. Their team helped with the delicate rescue operation.

“Thanks to the expertise and quick action of Martin Swanepoel and Damien Beech from Fidelity, they retrieved Zazu from the tree without injury,” said Jóvan.

“Their efforts not only ensured the macaw’s safe return but highlighted the importance of community support during unforeseen challenges.”

“We thank Theo, Martin and Damien, all the neighbours and friends who came together during this ordeal. This incident serves as a reminder of the power of community.”
