Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from May 2 to 4.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A Jones Avenue resident was robbed of his silver-coloured Chrysler in the driveway of his home by three hijackers.

The victim arrived home at around 20:45 and pulled up at the gate, waiting for his children to open it. A white Ford Fiesta stopped behind the victim’s vehicle, and three men armed with guns climbed out of the car.

They took the victim’s cellphone and told his children to go inside the house. The hijackers then fled with the victim still in the car.

His head was pushed down to prevent him from seeing where they were driving. The victim was later let go, and sought help from a community member who called his family.

• Aluminium strips and gas bottles with a combined value of around R150 000 were stolen during a break-in at a business along Beechwood Street in Dalpark.

• A home in Lower Road, Sunair Park, was burgled of jewellery, clothing, gaming consoles and other valuables.

Saturday – A Kawasaki motorbike was stolen from a locked garage at a property along Fireshire Street in Brenthurst.
• A cellphone and a purse containing bank cards and ID and driver’s licence cards were stolen from a vehicle parked at Carnival City.

The lock on the front left door was tampered with and damaged. The victim later discovered the stolen bank cards had been used to make multiple purchases in the Dalview and Dalpark areas.

• A Hamilton Avenue resident and his cousin were robbed of their cellphones by robbers travelling in a silver/grey Renault.

The victims were outside talking at about 20:45 when the Renault pulled up in front of the gate. The car’s back door opened and a gunman wearing a balaclava climbed out and ran towards the pair, demanding money.

He was joined by an accomplice and both victims were searched and robbed of their cellphones. The robbers then fled the scene.

Sunday – Staff and customers at a Voortrekker Road beauty salon were terrorised by two robbers. The men, one of whom was armed with a gun, entered the salon at around 12:45, and announced, “this is a robbery”.

The robbers demanded the victims’ cellphones and then told them to go the restroom in the shop. The victims were then locked inside. It was not disclosed whether any other valuables were taken.
