Hijacking attempt in Brenthurst: Police recover 9mm round after attack on mother and son

The would-be hijackers fled with a cellphone, but not the vehicle – and dropped a 9mm round in their rush to escape.

A woman and her son narrowly escaped a hijacking attempt in Brenthurst on August 21. According to police information, two men attempted to make off with the red Hyundai Venue the woman was driving.

The ordeal began when the mother and son arrived at a relative’s house along Grobler Street at around 20:15. After pulling up to the gate, the son opened the passenger door and was looking for a set of keys.

He must have seen the impending threat, as he suddenly shouted, “Mom, just drive.” The woman attempted to reverse but saw her path was blocked by a white sedan.

A man then walked towards her, pointing a gun at her. He told her to get our of the car. As the woman struggled to unbuckle her seatbelt, she pleaded with the gunman not to harm her or her son, and told him to take the car.

The gunman was joined by an accomplice and the two appeared to be arguing as they were shouting at each other. The woman was about to hand over the car keys to the gunman, when her relatives came out of the house.

This seemed to scare the pair off, as they ran away. One of them managed to grab the woman’s cellphone from the car before fleeing.

Footage from a neighbour’s property revealed a white BMW was used in the commission of the crime. A 9mm round dropped at the scene was recovered by police. Cases of attempted hijacking and armed robbery were opened.
