Dignity for the vulnerable at annual street shower

Word and Life Ministries Brakpan, along with Rata and Worthy Ministries, held their annual street shower last Saturday.

Word and Life Ministries Brakpan hosted their annual street shower in the parking lot of the Brakpan EMPD office on October 4.

Working alongside them were organisations such as Rata and Worthy Ministries, helping to restore dignity to Brakpan’s unhoused community.

This year’s annual event served over 250 people and is designed to support society’s most vulnerable. It begins with a health checkup including measurements of blood pressure, sugar levels, oxygen saturation and heart rate.

Following the checkup, beneficiaries receive a fresh set of clothes, toiletries, a towel and the opportunity to take a warm shower, often the first they have had in weeks or even months.

After showering, participants visit the grooming station for haircuts, hand and foot treatments and optional beard shaves.

They then move along a line of stalls set up under the covered parking area of the EMPD offices, receiving coffee or tea with a sweet treat, a cold drink, a meal and finally spiritual support from pastors and counsellors.
