Smell is suffocating

Anne, from Brakpan North writes: For the last couple of months we have been suffocating with the smell of burning rubbish and plastic.

It’s so bad it burns your nose and we have nose bleeds and sinus constantly.

My husband has Asbestosis and really suffers with breathing and this is making it worse.

It’s costing us thousands of Rand a month on medication, because of the smell that hangs around the area day and night.

It comes from the plastic squatters at the Weltevreden dump site and behind the Brakpan Dam on the Brakpan North side.

The squatter camp has grown three times in size over the last few weeks and the dump site have now even put a gate in for them to get in and out with the plastic they collect.

When is the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality going to do something about it?

They have been discussing it for very long, but there’s been no action.

Does the community have to start a protest to get some action?
