South Africans have once again been confronted by another senseless and brutal murder, and young Jasmin has become another statistic in our unacceptable murder and crime rates that just do not seem to abate.
The Democratic Alliance extends its condolences to the parents and friends of Jasmin, and to all other victims of domestic violence in South Africa.
Enough is enough and all good citizens need to stand up and shout out this scourge.
To this end, I was impressed by the number of people who attended Jasmin’s prayer service on Friday, January 3.
Special mention and appreciation needs to be extended to the Brakpan SAPS, the various Community Policing Forums from around Ekurhuleni, the amazing Pink Ladies who travelled from all parts of Gauteng, all religious and community leaders, and to our Brakpan residents who all contributed to the prayer service.
Thank you.
It must, however, be noted that this type of gathering should not be politicised as it was by some political parties.
This created discord amongst many mourners who expressed their disgust and walked out of the prayer service early.
Murder, crime and violence affect all South Africans, regardless of their political affiliation.
Those who politicised young Jasmin’s prayer service — hang your heads in shame!
The DA believes that justice will be delivered to the perpetrator of this senseless murder and we have every faith in our legal system that the court will deliver the most appropriate sentence.
Thank you Brakpan for demonstrating your resolve.
