Council has no respect

Is that the way people respect the dead?

Gabrielle writes by email:

I was at the Brakpan Cemetery yesterday (Sunday) and found the place is an absolute disgrace.

The weeds are taller than the actual headstones, headstones are broken off, just in general it was disgusting.

Is that the way people respect the dead?

Yes, people will say there’s not enough manpower to clean up, but surely there is not just one person working there or maintaining the place?

I saw three people sitting at the bottom office doing nothing, lazing in the sun, as I drove in at about 10am.

I understand it’s a huge area to cover, but surely something can be done?

It’s disgusting, my grandparents have been buried there since 1982 and I couldn’t even find their grave or stand numbers.

Editor’s note: Comment is awaited from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
